This book provides encouragement and direction for the pilgrim who desires to know, love, and serve our Lord. Audible review. Suddenly my min commute wasn't long enough! I knew early in the book that this was going to be special. I hung on to every word! Will be a guiding companion on my journey. I tried reading St. John of the Cross once and found that I was neither intellectually or spiritually prepared for his Ascent or Dark Night.

After listening to St. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has recognized in himself or herself even the slightest desire for God. The four star performance was only because the narrator sometimes mixes pronouns or reads incorrectly based on a comparison with the eBook version. WHY do publishers hire audio readers who read as though English is not their first language?

This guyy over enunciates everything and reads like he's reading a textbook. The delivery negatively affects the product. It's hard to be able tio listen to this book without being annoyed by the reader. Debating returning the book because of it. In the past 2 years I have listened on my Audible to the individual writings of these great teachers and doctors of spirituality. Ralph Martin has done a truly amazing job of making connections between them to allow us to see the commonality of their teachings as well as the depth of individual spiritual lessons they have to teach us.

The narrator was an excellent choice. His clear soft voice was so easy to listen to and did not distract from the message but pulls you in. Pull up an easy chair and sit down and learn. Or do as I do and listen on those long road trips. Either way please get this. You will be so glad you did. The author, Ralph Martin, has studied and taught on the college level classes on some of the well known saints he quotes from.

John of the Cross and many other saints and Doctors in order to add merit to the writings of the book and. A must read. Will read over and over to reset my compass to God every day. Loved the Audible version. Listened during car trips. Like entering a monastery for a retreat. Wonderful distillation of the wisdom of the Doctors of the Church on the Spiritual Marriage. I have tried to get into this audiobook twice now.

The first time I got 5 hours out of the 16 total into it, and this most recent time 8 hours. There was just too much sin, guilt, need for repentance, fear of everlasting damnation for my taste - not that these aren't realities, but there needs to be some balance with God's great love and mercy. Perhaps that was coming in the second half of the book, but I'm not willing to stick around to find out.

If you want a good introduction to the mystical doctors such as John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Catherine of Siena, etc.

Either read their works directly, or find a good book with daily meditations for reflection and prayer from their writings. These would be much more balanced ways to learn about these important theologians of the Church. One of the best writings and guides for my spiritual growth. What did you like best about this story? Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? Difficult to chose a single thing - I was amazed by mere fact of bringing the spiritual experiences of our Saints together in a new way and how they coincide one with another.

Sometimes almost identical. If I were to choose a single one thing it would be a warning given by St Teresa of Avila to those who seek seriously spiritual maturity: paraphrased : "I was misled for many years by my spiritual directors who kept calling no-sinful thing at all something which was in reality a venial sin and a venial-sinful thing that was a in reality a mortal sin until a Dominican priest straightened things out and called mortal sin a mortal sin and venial sin a venial thing. Since that moment my spiritual growth took a new growth. Any additional comments?

Great thanks to the author who without making of his own "theological and spiritual acrobatics" shows a "proven" way to spiritual maturity by honest study of the Doctors of the Catholic Church. Having heard Ralph Martin's seminars, it took a while to get used to the narrator. However once I got rhythm of his speech I really enjoyed it and found the books content enlightening and challenging. Would you listen to The Fulfillment of All Desire again? You simply have to - so much to glean from which cannot be achieved in simply one sitting.

Sort order. Jul 30, Wanda rated it it was amazing Shelves: spiritual-reading , This is an excellent book! It is similar in some respects to Fire Within by Fr. Dubay, yet different enough to warrant reading it even if you have read Fire Within. The book describes the spiritual journey, as discovered by the 7 saints, through the call to holiness, the purgative way, the illuminative way and the unitive way. I This is an excellent book! I always find it exhilarating to read about this journey, although the discussion of the "dark night" always scares me more than a little!

This is a book that I will return to often for a refresher course. In my own Scripture reading, I had always been somewhat puzzled by Jesus' teaching that He would be in us and we would be in Him.

    Stay in Touch

I could readily understand how He was in us, especially in light of the Eucharist, but I have never been certain what it means for us to be in Him. In Fulfillment of All Desire, p. I am chewed as I am reproved by him; I am swallowed as I am taught; I am digested as I am changed; I am assimilated as I am transformed; I am made one as I am conformed. Do not wonder at this. Otherwise we are not perfectly united with him. For if I eat and am not eaten, then he is in me but I am not yet in him Jn. But he eats me that he may have me in himself, and he in turn is eaten by me that he may be in me, and the bond between us will be strong and the union complete, for I shall be in him and he likewise will be in me.

No pun intended, lol. Jesus sincerely desires us more than we can probably ever know while on this earth, and this ongoing revelation stokes the fires within me, making me yearn to strive even harder to somehow be worthy of someday being close to Him. I'm starting to get tired of myself saying that "this book is life changing", but it seems that's how so many of the books I've read recently are.

This was the perfect follow up to Fire Within and I read it because the good folks at the Facebook group Authentic Contemplative Prayer were reading it. This is such a clear, definitive synopsis of St John of the Cross, St Teresa of Avila, St Therese of Lisieux, and St Bernard of Clairvaux's writings on the spiritual life and specifically spiritual ma I'm starting to get tired of myself saying that "this book is life changing", but it seems that's how so many of the books I've read recently are. What a revelation to see their thoughts on a particular aspect of prayer or holiness put together.

The unity and similarity can only have come from One Source. I've marked so many passages to further meditate on, practice, and share with loved ones. A blessing to grow through these saints' guidance this Lent. This book is also included in Dan Burke's spiritual reading plan, which I am following roughly, as I've. I intend to follow it more closely now. Jun 02, Kris McGregor rated it it was amazing.

What Ralph Martin accomplishes is extraordinary. He synthesizes the teachings of the great mystical doctors of the Church St. Augustine, St. Francis De Sales, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. And the great thing is that it begins today, now…holiness is a universal calling for all of us. If there was one book I would recommend to have, besides the Bible of course, it is this one first and foremost!

I learned that the fulfillment of all desire comes from a life of prayer and modeling our behavior to that of Christ. For when we become more Christ-like we unite with the pin I read The Fulfillment of All Desire, by Ralph Martin, in preparation to give a prayer and spirituality retreat. For when we become more Christ-like we unite with the pinnacle of our desire — that of Christ himself. The book is lengthy, with numerous quotes from the works of the saints. Ralph Martin lets the saints tell the story of how one might develop the fulfillment of all desire.

If I had one complaint, it is that the quotes were too numerous. The man is a brilliant and esteemed professor of Theology.

With that said, I hoped that by reading this book, I would gain much insight from Mr. Instead, he let the saints tell the story. This book walks the reader through the three stages to holiness: 1 the Purgative Way, 2 the Illuminative Way, and 3 the Unitive Way. In a nutshell, to grow in holiness, we must first acknowledge our sinful ways and purge ourselves of the sinful life. Once emptied of sin, God can illuminate for us how to proceed on the path to holiness, with the ultimate culmination, that of union with God — seeing God face-to-face in heaven! If you are looking for ways to grow closer to Christ, then this book just might be for you.

It is easy to read and understand. You never know, it might bring about the fulfillment of all of your own desire! Jul 06, Ray Schneider is currently reading it. This is one of those books which draws you into the primary materials. It is about the great mystics especially folks like Teresa Avila and John of the Cross and about five others. I think it is very valuable for those who wish to decide what direction to go in their reading about contemplative prayer. I was struck by how many five star ratings there were on Amazon for it. Shelves: spiritual , hagiography , prayer , theology.

Just comparing books for Adoration and Wanda recommended this one which I'd never heard of. Also, I just noticed that goodreads added the feature, 'how many times I've read this book'. Maybe it's been there awhile, but this is the first time I've seen it. Not sure if I'm happy about it or not I cannot say enough about this book. It is truly a work of grace!

Martin gives us bite size pieces of some of the most profound and sometimes difficult works by these saints, such as John of the Cross' Dark Night of the Soul and Teresa's Interior Castles. This book is for anyone no matter where they are on their spiritual journey. Through prayerful reading, the reader becomes aware that God calls all of us to holiness, to become saints, and that what awaits us in heaven is worth all the trials and sufferings endured in this life. Their is also a companion study guide available with questions for comprehension of the text as well as questions for reflection.

I highly recommend using the study guide as the questions will help you review and process what you have read, and the questions for reflection will help you to go deeper into your own spiritual life and see where and how the teachings of the saints as well as Holy Scripture can be applied to your own daily life. I will close this review with St John of the Cross' prayer: May the most sweet Jesus, Bridegroom of faithful souls, be pleased to bring all who invoke His name to this marriage.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about the spiritual life. The book is quite readable and does not require a lot of theological background, but I did find that it required a lot of effort to get through.
